I changed the subject line as I didn't wish to hijack the thread. I apologize
for not doing that sooner.

Minke came with a carpet that seemed stable (didn't wander around) and on
the top surface seemed sound and not significantly worn. The underside had
a plastic coating on some very coarse "treads" that seemed to give the
carpet strength. The coating was disintegrating with a dust that went into
the bilge and I believe I found some floating in the battery acid. I
intend to discard the carpet next time I work on her.

Due to what you said Nico I think some benign neglect is in order. I'll do
nothing until I've more experience. Perhaps the texture will be sufficient.

I've taken home the two "floorboards" that cover access to the bilge in the
cabin and intend to replace them with copies. Under normal conditions do
they tend to stay in place well?? Should I think about a scheme to hold
them in place?? Since they'll be plywood does anyone have suggestions for
coating them??

thanx,,,

Here is a thing I have used and it works pretty good without haveing
sand that will wear out your socks:) On another boat I owned I
warnish the floorboards but paint will work too, Painted and salted
while paint is wet. ( table salt) When dry wash the boards in water.
That desolves the salt and the paint then has a rough texture that is
non slip. Worked good for me.
