I am rebuilding the engine cover on my 83 H34. Any suggestions for new plywood to use. Also, What is a good source for the sound proofing in the engine compartment? The foam has turned to powder!

Ron,
Any decent grade of 1/2" hardwood Ply should work, I really don't think marine is necessary since it shouldn't be getting wet.

As for sound proofing this site, defender, west marine etc. all carry foam made for the purpose just search for sound proofing. Alas, the stuff is not cheap! You'll also want a roll of heat resistant tape for seams.
The trick is attaching it. The stuff I had, had an adhesive backing but I wanted something a bit more secure so I used plastic tube inserts stuck into holes punched in the foam (with a pencil) and screws with washers to secure the foam. The insert keeps the screw from binding up in the foam and act as a depth stop for the screw.

If the plwood that you are replacing/using is a finished surface facing into the cabin, then go with a teak plywood 12mm thick (~ 0.5 In.). The teak is a vaneer finish. I have used it (Teak Marine Plywood 12mm) in the galley area lower third to replace what had wicked up water from the deck in the galley. the original teak Plywood was NOT sealed on the bottom edges. The new that I put in, I coated the edges (all edgse) with West System epoxy to ensure that there would be no water wicking up on it. Where the new plywood on the lower portion mated with the original plywood above it, I put on a Teak batten strip at the mating joint. It just looks like trim, and after coating ti all with a MinWax Poly Shades Polyurethane it all looks the same now. I was pleased with how it turnrd out.

Thanks for the replies. Thought that might be a teak veneer. I also have to replace the lower boards in the galley. I've sealing all edges and backsides of wood that is near the floor with epoxy.
