I HAVE A 1978 CATALINA 30 [TALL RIG]. I'M CHANGING MY CEILING LIGHTS AND HAVE COME TO FIND NO POWER IN THREE OF MY LAMPS. INTERNAL WIRING INACCESSIBLE? A FORMER ARCHIVE PIECE ON ANOTHER MODEL SUGGESTED RUNNING EXTERNAL WIRES AND TRY TO MAKE IT LOOK NEAT. BEFORE I GO THAT ROUTE....ANY IDEAS,SYMPATHY OR SUGGESTIONS? THANKS.

My experience with the problem

After determining that a ground wire to the last lamp on a 4 lamp circuit was faulty, I thought I could reave a new wire through by attaching it to the old one. No way! On my older 27 (and I guess the other Catalila models of that era) the wiring harness was simply glassed in between the liner and the core. That's a common cost saving technique for boats of our quality level. So it was impossible to remove, much less replace. My suggestion is to use the good existing wiring as best you can. Replace the damaged wire with external wires and try concealing them with an attractive conduit. An inexpensive continuity tester will help you determine the damaged circuits.

i have a 22 ft'r and the lights are located port

and starboard. in rewiring them i was able to kinda tuck the wires out of the way between the liner and the hull..yes i did it very carefully.. but like the other sailor mentioned mine too was wired sandwiched in the glass.if you use some kind of conduit..i dont think the kind with the double sided tape will work,at least not for very long...if u do rewire, there is a special kind that u should use in ur boat.someone will hopefully help me out here. as "marine"wire is different. just can't think of what it is treated with..grrrrrr...it's on the tip of my tongue...help someone....
