My wife and I are new to Catalina ownership and sailing as well. I discovered 4 leaks in our newly purchased 1982 27' catalina. In an effort to better understand where our leaks are and where they are coming from I wiped down my whole cabin, dried up the surfaces and removed all stuff that would get in the way. We have had a lot of rain in Houston this week. Obviously these leaks are relating to what is falling from the sky. So I can safely assume it is not coming from somewhere else. And I am also assuming that since there are no visible cracks in my deck that the water is coming from where the hardware meets the deck. Where I am seeing water is in the v berth port side shelf ledge. Behind the wood bannister is some water. Also there is water in the port side closet. Also there is water underneath the stove. And lastly starboard on the shelf ledge behind the settee. My question is......I bought some marine caulk and am ready to get started. How do you start to fix these leaks? Just take off the hardware and caulk somewhere??? How much caulk do you use? Where do you caulk? How long does it have to sit before you can touch the hardware? Learning here. Thanks

The first thing is to determine exactly where

the water is coming from. It may be windows leaking (a given on older Catalinas). If your boat had been poorly maintained, it's probably a good idea to add rebedding all exterior hardware to your chore list. There's more to be done if you run into wet core but cross that bridge when and if you come to it. Good luck and have fun!

Rebedding

What is rebedding? Is there where you take off the hardware, clean it up and apply it back with some adhesive caulk?

Use Association Website, too

Pres The responses are correct. You should make yourself aware of and get into the C27 Association websites. The "official" on is www.c27.org, or www.catalina27.org. The unofficial one is on the link. Stu

C 27 leaks

I ahve a 75 C 27 and had some of the same leaks. The wather in the port closet is problably coming from the chainplate backing plate which is at the top of the closet ceiling. It re-enforces the lower shroud I think. Just loosen the nut and take bolt out and re-bed. that should fix it. The water on the V berth shelf is probably coming through the deck/hull seam up there. Get some of that Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure from West, BUS, or some such place and squeeze a lot of it along the top part of the rub rail molding outside of the crack. The stuff will seep into the cracks where the water comes in. This seam behind the rub rail is a bad place all over the boat for water to starting getting in, especially where water drains off the deck, over the rubrail, and down the hull. The Captain T stuff works well. Good luck.
