Cabin Leak

After a steady all day rain I find puddles of water in both side storage compartments by the V-berths and then that leak has futher migraded down along the starboard side dinette area where the wooden drink holder is and the water will puddle below the dinette cushions. Looking in the area where these side pockets are located I thought the water was coming in from the safety stanchions because both port and starboard sides were leaking, so I rebedded both stanchions, but that did not stop the leaking. Looking at the cabin top for a source of leaks I found the hand rails (but they seem mounted too far back to cause the leak) and then there are the flat mounted side rollers for the mast halyards (but they are mounted on a raised section of deck and they seem very secure). I cannot figure out where so much water can be coming in, when it leaks - at least pint of water is making its way into the boat somehow. If anyone has had any experience with this type of leak I would sure like to hear from you.

Anchor locker

I don't know too much how your boat is set up but I had a leak under the vee berth,it was coming from cracks in the anchor locker.

I think I found the problem

Well this summer we had a lot of rain which we really needed. Both the galley and the head cabinets were full of water to the point of Full. Dry forward so I just resealed not removed just resealed the top window you know the dirty one. And then put on the dodger front windows and has not leaked since. It was not a pretty job and I wish I was better at putting the sealant on, not easy to make it look like original seal job. Thinking of taking BOB somewhere to have it resealed, also replace the rub Rail because I still have the problem with water in rear compartment

Strange leaks

I recently bought a 1978 Hunter 27. Although the boat was very clean and in good condition I noticed several (6-8) small vertical stains about 4-5 inches long and 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide on the interior walls of the hull (carpeted areas). They were spaced anywhere from 1 to 3 feet apart in the bow area and in the qtr berth area. Then we got a hard rain and I discovered they were water stains. I finally found that the culprits were a few loose toe rail bolts. My lady friend and I removed each that felt loose and applied sealant in the hole, then reinerted the bolts and tightened them. This is a two person job because there is a nut in the inside and the bolt head on the deck. Viola! no more leaks (for now) Some day I will get around to rebedding all of them. (there are a LOT of those bolts)

Finding leaks

We recently bought a '84 H31 and were told that it had a lot of leaks before we bought it. The boatyard/broker that we bought the boat from said that they sealed the main sliding hatch and pressurized the cabin with air. They sprayed soapy water on the decks and found 39 leaks and sealed them. Our boat does not leak! I thought that was the coolest thing I have ever heard of! I have been chasing leaks in sailboats all my life. I'm going to try to do this myself on other boats. I woould imagine that you could replace the hatch boards with a piece of plywood with a blower mounted in it and seal the rest with duct tape. It would be interesting if anyone else has tried this or any other methods for tracking down leaks.

Yes this is pretty much standard procedure for finding leaks. A good shop vac with a blower attachment should do the trick.
