Hi everyone. We are in the process of trying to renovate the cabin of our new (to us) boat. The previous owner had installed carpet, yes, I said carpet, throughout the entire cabin. Maybe it was a good idea in it's day, but after twenty-five years, you can imagine the stench it emanated. Maybe you can't. Anyway, we have removed the carpetfrom all the walls and ceiling, interestinly enough, he didn't have any on the floor. Now, we must remove the glue and prep the raw fiberglass for paint. Does anyone have any sugestions as to glue removal, base primer, finish coat? Thanks for any input.

glue removal

I imagine there are several commercial products that are available. Two easily available and cheap products are: Brake Kleen in a 16 oz spray can (CRC Brand clorinated fluocarbon as opposed to the "green" type brake cleaner) and any ether type starting fluid in a spray can. Both of these products are available at Auto Parts stores. They are cheap enough to buy one can of each to experiment. If you don't use them in the boat, they will come in handy for general clean up. BTW the starting ether is a GREAT way to clean up oily type stains on fabrics/clothing.

Be careful!!!!!!

If you use that stuff make sure of your ventilation. I prefer to use 3M adhesive remover. Worked great on my boat on which the PO did the same thing.

Goo Gone

I used some citrus based stuff from Home Depot. It worked well. Then wipe down with Laquer thinner; cheaper than Acetone but VENTILATE and NO SPARKS surface will be ready for paint. Thin polyurethan with Penetrol and it rolls on like Buttah!! No need for primers. I noticed Pettit has a water based paint Dura White for interiors. Screw that! use varathane, a high quality water base and save the "Marine label tax" This has worked well for me, good luck. What manner of craft is that?

Painting over adhesive

We had a similar problem with an interior. The fabric liner had mildewed and we pealed all the fabric off leaving some backing and adhesive on the hull. We did not want to use any solvents in the enclosed space so we tried grinding and sanding the residue. We gave up on all efforts and at the suggestion of a friend at a paint store used a water-based latex bathroom paint. It covered great and has lasted over 8 yrars with only washing when dirty. The paint stops mildew and it stuck to the glue residue just fine. fair winds, Dave

West Marine has a good product

Henry, West marine has a house brand of adhesive remover that seems to work really well for this. I had the same problem with glued-on carpet and tried various things, including Goo Gone, Sticker Off, De-Bond 2000, etc., but the West Marine stuff is working the best (see link). As for painting the raw fiberglass underneath, I like the shiny whiteness of POR-15 Whitecote. It's a 2-part epoxy that requires ventilation, but the finish is beautifully hard and white and almost impossible to stain. Easypoxy...West marine

I used Easypoxy to paint some areas in my cabin this year. It is really easy to use and it covers everything well.

Love that boat, Henry

What is it? How old is it? Who designed it? I have not seen many yawls under 30 feet, especially recently. And it looks to be maintained to the hilt. EMail me sometime and tell me about it! By the way I too am painting all that awful teak-look (paper) laminate on my bulkheads. Makes a heck of a difference. JC 2 cherubiniyachts@aol.com

Removing carpet glue

I had the same problem with carpet installed by a PO. I found that I could remove it with Klean Strip Fiberglass Paint Remover, a product sold at auto body shop supply houses. I worked small areas at a time and the thicker layers of glue took several applications but it was not difficult. Good luck Peter
