I have a 1990 35.5 and the white lining material (vinyl?) in the aft and forward cabins is showing its age, discoloured and would like to either replace it, cover over it or paint it. Any advice would be appreciated.

......................... on how much work you want to put into it.

I was recently forced into replacing a section of the vinyl liner in the aft berth. I suspect your material is similar to ours in that it's vinyl with a foam backing. When I went to pick up the material from an automotive supplier, I was told that foam backed vinyl liners were no longer available. So .................... I wound up with vinyl AND a foam backed felt head liner which I glued to the back of the vinyl. I was lucky in that the material was a near perfect match to the original. I was also told that the $$$BETTER$$$ materials had an antifungicide in them. Sounds good but I don't have any better info than his sales pitch.

Next move was to remove the old stuff which was slow but was finally gone. Used a razor blade and a small scraper to remove the old stuff. Difficult to remove the old foam because it keeps tearing and comes away in small pieces. It'd be a perfect job for a bunch of little kids, they'd love it :D (minus the razors of course). The new stuff was put in place with an aerosol adhesive which works like contact cement. It doesn't have to be 100% covered with glue, just the strategic places. The biggest obstacle was pressing it behind cabinets, woodwork, bulkheads, etc, etc. etc.

A long slow job but it looked every bit as good as the original when finished.

You may also want to look at the project that Art Boas did on his H49. This makes a permanent solution and looks like what the factory should have done.
