We have purchased a new sailboat and need to add cabin fans in the salon and berths. In our old boat we had fans that were noisy thus makiing sleep difficult. We're looking for fans that can be mounted. Can anyone recommend fans that are reasonalbe in price and QUIET?

Hella fans

Look at the hella fans. they a quiet and low amperage! the Larger one is a little expensive ~ $60 they also make a smaller on for about half price. I have three large and two small one on my Oceanis 350. I remeber reading a report where the hella fans run years until breaking down. This was an endurance test for several of the most common fans. Stay cool, Marc

Try Walgreeens for 110-powered

We felt we needed them for our 28.5. I found tham at Walgreens for about $10 each. They are 110-volt and have spring clips so they can be mounted anywhere you need them and the heads swivel 360 degrees on 2 axis. Used 'em know for 5+ years...they work really well.

Hella-va-fan

I bought Hella fans for the salon and they run very economically. Very little power draw. They are quiet, but one drawback is that they do not oscillate. But in a salon, that isn't too bad if you use two of them. About $60 each. For the berth, we bought Caframo fans that fold flat, set on a flat surface, and are powered by 4 "D" batteries. They will run all night, all season on those batteries. I use older flashlight batteries to finish them off in the fans. They do not oscillate, but you can adjust the fan speed so that you can leave if pointed directly at you. They sell at all the camping and boating stores for around $20/ea. Sometimes you can find them at a department store in the camping section. See the related link

Caframo for me

I got a coupe of Hella's and 2 Caframo's and I will only buy the Caframo's next time. the Hella's will vibrate like crazy if the aren't mounted verticle and the friction locks that hold them in place tend to vibrate loose.. I wired all the fans into the overhead lighting circuits. I just removed the overhead lights and tapped off the wire. My amp meter shows the Hella's burn about .4 amp and the Caframo's about .5 Caframo seems to put out more air... Both fans were rated very high by PS by the way.. Brian

Don't get cheap fans.

They use more amps and are not made for salty air. Pay for the good fans, and enjoy them for a long time without draining the battery. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

cheap but good

The 12 volt Hella brand Turbo fans are $69.99 at West Marine and draw 200 mA. They're real nice. The West Marine brand FanJet is $19.99 and the description says it draws 270 mA (still not much). When you get it out of the West Marine box guess what it says on it? . . . "Hella" They're real nice, too. The mount is a little different but I actually like the West Marine brand mount better. I have some permanently mounted and they kind of fold up out of the way when not in use. I also have one that I mounted to a little block of teak, then drilled some holes in one of those large sized keep-the-potato-chip-bag-closed clip thingies and screwed it to the other side of the teak block so it's portable, clips anywhere I want it. I have a long cord with a cigarette lighter type plug on it so it will plug in several places on the boat. Morrie
