If you have a Macgregor 26 then there will be some kind of bracket that attaches the pop-top to the mast. I can say how the othe macgregors work but I would think they all work in the similar fashion, meaning that you are missing a part.
Can't tell you what it's called. But I have this little thingy, with a wing nut. It hooks to pop-top and tightens to the mast. Call some of the Mac/venture parts dealers, they'll know.
I wondered the same thing on my Mac 25. Then I realized that the two poles with flat ends slips right into the bracets to hold it into place on top of the cabin. Hope this helps.
