Being unable to find any ideas for mounting a horizontal windlass on a 1983 C30, I gave it some thought and came up with what you see in the attached photo's. I'm pleased to say it works very well. Our rode is made up of 250 ft of 9/16 3 strand nylon line and 30 ft of 5/16 BBB chain, when retrieveing the anchor the line coils itself very neatly (unassisted) in the locker and the chain drops nicely into the middle of the coil.

The windlass and the fwd bow rail stanchions are bolted through the bow sprit, through the deck, and through a large backing plate. The bracket under the bowsprit is fastened at the bow using the bolts that hold the forestay bracket to the hull and by a "U" bolt at the tip of the bowsprit. The length of the bowsprit depends on the size of the anchor, our 33lb Bruce has a long shank requiring a bit more overall length. We are fortunate in that it extends only 2 1/2 inches past the bow rail, any further and it may of impacted our berthing fees.

I suspect this method could be employed on other Catalina models that have a similar anchor locker arrangement. Hopefully someone out here will find this info usefull.

Did you make a new sprit? On my 85 the wood doesn't go aft that far. I have wondered for 6 years what kind of mods it would take to install one, thanks. I have drawn up a plan for a new sprit with a side extension just large enough for someone to stand on to jump in the water. Instead of launching off the railing, waiting for someone to bend it. I did add 2 small swim platforms to the stern. Approx 16"x16" (small powerboat type) and I used SS hinges and through bolts with a backing plate. And I put short 45 degree "leggs" under each one for support. Check it out.

Yes I added it, it's more of a pseudo sprit, only used for anchoring. The rigging, standard C30 without a bowsprit, was not altered at all. If you look close at the photo's you see where the sprit was routed out to accommodate the fore-stay fitting and then filled in with sealer to prevent water intrusion.

I like your idea for the stern swim grids, it had never occured to me to make them so they can be folded out of the way.
