C27 or C30?

I am considering the purchase of a C27. I have 3 boys between 4 and 9 and plan to use the boat mostly for day sailing, some weekends, and an occasional sail across the sound for an overnight. Will a C27 be large enough or should we consider a c30? I'd appreciate any opinions or comments. Thank you!

Go for the C30

I have a C27, its plenty of room for 2, it might sleep you and kids well..But not enough room to move around the cabin. I would deffinitly go for the C30.

Smallest boat that meets your needs

You might want to consider the smallest boat that meets your needs. Chances are, the smaller the boat, the more often she'll sail (kinda' funny, but there seems to be an inverse proportional relationship). May also allow you to spend more money on ammenities, like a dingy, etc. that will make your time aboard more enjoyable for you and your sons. Best of luck!

I'm Torn

Steve and Mike both make good points. For day sailing, the 27 is fine. On the other hand, your boys will grow and the 30 is definitely the better choice for weekend overnights. I had a 27 and moved up to a 30 and don't find the 30 any more difficult to sail. Having the extra room might increase the frequency of overnights. After writing this, I think I'd opt for the 30.

c27 or c30

I own a C27 (5110). I love it. However, the C30 will be more comfortable for you in the long run. I assume it is a used boat, as mine was. After upgrading it, fixing problems, I wish I put that investment of time and money into the larger boat. All that aside, the axiom is..."buy the biggest boat you can afford" don't look back and enjoy it to the max. Happy sailing!!!

C30

I have a 27 and it's perfect for my needs but if you're planning on any overnighters, I think the 30 would probably be a better choice for you. Still easy to sail but loads more room for the fam. LaDonna

I would actually look at 32 or larger.

David, I have four girls and for me, even the 34 seemed a little small for weekenders or longer stays. We bought the 36 and find it perfect for coastal cruising. I have looked at the 32s and the 310s. I would think for space and comfort the 32 would be more appropriate for larger crews. Take a look. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

C-30 = More Options

A C-32 may be larger, but, being a newer model, you're not going to have the price options you'll have with either the 30 or the 27. There are 27s and 30s from the early 80s and even the late 70s that are great buys if they've been well maintained. They're priced at a fraction of what you'd pay for a 32, 34 or 36. I have a 1981 C-30 that is in great condition.

Thanks for the input!

I think I'll look for a C30 (early 80's) that's within my budget. Thanks all for your comments!
