Having searched the archives I am still perplexed by a problem I'm having with the ignition on our 87' C27. When attempting to start the M18 diesel I experience an issue with the key switch. Turn the key to the "On" position, buzzer activates, and then when I push the GP button it usually interrupts the cycle, the buzzer goes off and it appears the sequence is stopped. I then have to turn the key swithch left/right to get a good contact. Upon getting a good contact, and holding the GP button in (30 sec) I hit the Start button and get nothing, usually takes several attempts depressing said button before it makes contact and the starter engages.

Question? Is this a single sympton of the wiring harness needing attention or mutilple issues, key switch (needing replacement), start button (needs replacement) and/or wiring harness needs attention. I've read the the threads discussing the wiring harness upgrade and changing the volt meter to an ammeter. I'm thinking this is a harness problem but the key switch has been problematic since we purchased the boat last year. The "Start Button" issue began mid season this year. I'd like to fix this ASAP!

Steve, you've listed everything I would suggest except the fuseholder in the wire from the start button to the starter solenoid and a bad or loose engine ground.

If you still have an ammeter in the cockpit panel AND you still have the original engine wiring harness ( a FIRE hazard BTW) AND you haven't installed a glow plug solenoid to reduce the glow plug time and eliminate running amps all the way to the cockpit panel, you have a LOT of work to do.

In answer to your question, that is.

After having our boat for 13 + years, reading about the wiring harness stories which began over 25 years ago, and reminding people about it on many different boating forums every time I can, that's where I suggest you start.

Why?

'Cuz that's where the wires that operate what you describe ALL run. A faulty harness CONNECTOR - which is the real issue, not the wires, it's the cheap connectors - will show up.

Our engines, in that regard, are identical. You may be interested in our C34 Critical Upgrades topic, which discusses and summarizes many engine related issues.

It's your safety that's at risk here. Get to it. Please.

Thanks Stu, I followed the link and have most of the info regarding this issue. Appreciate the heads up. I'll be at the boat this weekend to check this out.

First..... check the battery.... practically always the culprit. Then, start testing from the battery..... working your way towards the starter, checking each components' connection. It could be something as simple as a dirty connection to the starter solenoid. A simple $20 digital tester should be in your tool drawer. Learn to use it and you'll be amply rewarded.
