While I’m looking at the estimate to rebuild my 1984 M-18 I’m starting to contemplate converting to an outboard. I’m not trying to start a discussion of the merits of each system but rather what work is involved. I’m thinking of using a 9.9, 4 cycles, long shaft on a Garelick mount. The 1984 C27 doesn’t appear designed for an OB. There is no cutout into the locker. What type of reinforcement is necessary in the transom area? Looking for suggestions. Thanks, Jim

outboard conversion

John Vigor in his book, "20 Small Sailboats That Will Take You Anywhere", reports that a sailor who took his Cat 27 around the world installed an outboard on a bracket with a beefed up transom. Think of the storage you will gain when you get rid of the diesel. Four strokes are great, but be sure you get the remote option as well as a robust alternator.
