i recently acquired a 1971 22 catalina swing keel that had been abandoned and moored out for two years. i need to pull the boat but do not have specific trailer for this boat. i do have an Express dual axle trailer designed to haul a 20-22 foot grady white cuddy cabin. this trailer has two sets of adjustable pads for drive on use. is there a possibility that i can haul the catalina out (only going 5 miles with it)on this poiwer boat trailer if the keel is up? any info or input greatly appreciated. novice sailor all help appreciated

See if it fits . . .

The keel (when raised) protrudes about 14" from the bottom of the boat. The pads on your trailer will have to be high enough to provde this clearance. I would adjust them up about 18 - 20" higher than the keel rollers on the trailer and see if you can float the boat onto the trailer. Remember that the boat should NOT rest on it keel as that would damage the hull. Regards, Ted

If it fits...

...with the boat resting on the pads and secured adequately, I don't see any reason you couldn't go the 5 miles...albeit may a bit carefully. After you get the boat onto the pads, lower to keel to the keel rollers to take the weight off the cable. A good bounce down the road may snap the cable, or worse, with the shock loads if the cable is not slackened. Mine is a '72 swing keel. Good boat...lots of fun. Enjoy! Brad.
