- - Chicago
Hi, New to the forum, finding it very useful already. I learned the basics of how to sail last year and I would like to buy my first boat. I am considering the purchase of a late 1970's C22 with a Shoal Keel, but have a general (probably rather naive) question: - Is this boat intended to be permanently moored or be a trailerable drop in the water day-sailor type boat? Asking because I'd like to avoid costly Chicago mooring fees and I would like the flexiblility of gaining experience/confidence on smaller lakes than Lake Michigan. Realted questions are: - Can the boat be transported with the mast standing? Or would I have to raise and lower the mast everytime I were in take it in and out of the water? How difficult is this? Am I talking minutes or hours? - Is Shoal Keel suitable for constantly launching/retracting the boat? - Is Shoal Keel suitable for constaint trailering? Thanks much! Dave

Trailering

I owned a fixed keel 1974 C22 for 6 years. While we had a slip in the marina, we trailered the boat a lot traveling to various races. My wife and I could rig in less than 30 minutes. Mast has to lowered and tied down for trailering. You just have to get everthing set up and get a routine established. We just bought a 1984 C22 after being without one for 12 years. I have made a gin pole to aid in the mast raising and lowering; and can do so single handed now. I will keeping mine on the trailer full time now. Like you, marina costs are just too high. Besides that, I like going to different places.
