Do any of you have direct experience with the 240 and swing keel Catalina 22? Which is less tender? I sailed a MacGregor 24 swing keel (not water ballast) and it was a good boat, stood up pretty well. I'm leaning towards a 240, but a C22 is another great option in my opinion. Thanks, -Richard

c22 vs H240

The h240 is tender. All water ballast boats are tender. They heal early and easily, but once healed, they tend to settle down. The c22 is a very popular boat, fleets all over the country. The h240 is has a lot more room, and there PHRF is fairly close; so you could assume they sail about the same. Not a lot of options on the sails for the h240. It really boils down to a personal preference; what do you really want in a boat. I opted for the h240. I wanted the room, large cockpit, ease of mast raising.

We need to move on

This "tender" issue strikes me as a bit ridiculous within the context of the class of boats we're talking about. All small sailboats are "tender," unless they are designed for heavy weather, in which case they are no fun to sail on those balmy afternoons that are the province of we Weekend Warriors. My vote is with Michael - it boils down to your intended use. No boat can be all things to all people. I'd see if I could arrange some sailing of each model if possible. Good luck.

I used to knock C22's until...

...I actually sailed one. There is a strong C22 fleet in central Florida and for the longest while I couldn't understand why they were so popular. Well I finally sailed one about six months ago and found that they are fun, fast boats. They are affordable, easy to rig and trailer, have a roomy cockpit and a fair amount of room below for a short cruise. With the board down it was stable and with the board up you can beach it and wade ashore. I agree with soling42...buy the boat that you will USE in the conditions you sail now, not the ideal boat to sail someday, somewhere else. Peter H23 "Raven"

Fun indeed

One of my marina buddies sails a C22. I LOVE sneaking up behind and passing him to windward in my 240. I especially like throwing a cold beer into his cockpit as his sails go momentarily limp. Who invented work? Sheesh.

It's gettin' pretty deep ;p

Any reader of Southwinds sailing rag knows Bubba Wartz sails a very crusty ferro cement wonder which must look similar to the c22 that a 240 can sneak up to and pass while you're giddily chuckin' cold beers with wonton disregard for safety and drinking etiquette. Drew, Drew, Drew.......come on I’ve seen the central Fla c22 fleet racing and gotta say the top 75% would have had about any 240 for lunch(or cold beer if you're buying/tossing). Passing a c22 in an equally equipped 240 certainly would invoke euphoria, but any true sailor throwin' out a perfectly good cold beer while doing it is just, .....just too shameful and outrageous to believe. Now you’ll have me looking over my shoulder every time somebody passes me. Sheesh, now I gotta get a fishin' net. Michael PS. you need to drag that 240 racing steed down to Sarasota and we’ll trade a tale or two over a beer at the end of the day. Maybe we’ll challenge the local c22 fleet, I’ll tell ‘em you’re giving free beer to anybody that lets us pass ‘em. Better bring lotsa beer:)
