I recently got a catalina 22 the keel fell off in dock in about 8-10 feet of sea-water. How can I get it back on and are their any special bolts, and dose the bolt install on the underside of the boat.

Swing keel

I Changed out the bolt and spacers on my catalina 22. I used a car jack with the boat on a trailer to work it into place. You can buy the pin kit from a company called "catalina direct" in california. The keel is very heavy and getting it of the bottom will be difficult. I would try to tie a line trough the hole were the pin would go and pull the keel out. It will take several people I imagine. Good Luck

Swing Keel

I have a 25SK but I assume the keel attachments are similar to the 22. The keel swings on a pin that rotates in two castings which attach from the outside. Both castings are bolted (2 bolts each) to the underside. You can buy the entire kit from Catalina Direct. You can do the installtion yourself (check other forums; use the "threaded rods" method). You may also have to replace the cable (assembly) on the other end of the keel that raises and lowers the keel. These parts also can be purchased. The question is: why was the keel lost??? There may be damage to the keel trunk or hull. Needs to be insspected. I have heard that the keel dropped when the cable parted, but not that the whole keel fell.

keel

hello drew, your keel weighs six hundred pounds did you go under water to look at the under side? It is likely that it came unbolted rather than worn out the hangers. If it is still attached to the lowering/lifting cable, you may be able unhook the cable from the winch and use it lift it off the bottom enough to put a sling around it when you haul the boat out for the repair. good luck john

Keel

John, why would you get it off the winch? If the cable is stil attached, wouldn't you use the winch to lift the keel off the ground? However, if the water is 8 to 10 feet, the cable isn't that long, so it either parted, or the keel is dangling one side.

cable

hello joerg, if the keel has simply come unbolted, and the cable is still attached to the back of the keel, it is attached by a 1/4th inch eye bolt and you may break it off trying to lift the keel, so if you are under the keel, under water, trying to lift the front pivot back into contact so you can re-bolt the hangers, and the eyebolt snaps this keel may drop on you and pin you to the bottom. the cable is about ten to 15 feet long and you may have enough to lift it enough to get a sling under it while you are on the air filled dock. if the water is 10 ft. deep the keel, when attached, is seven ft. off the seabed, it weighs 600 pounds, how are you going to hold it over your head to bolt it in? have you been under to check, are the bolts broken off, is the pin shorn off, have the attach points been torn away, is the keel actually there? john john

Cable

John, I didn't mean to go below and try to attach the keel while underwater. No way. I just suggest to leave the cable on the winch, krank it up a bit to lift at leat one end of the keel off the ground, then sling two sturdy lines underneath, lift it up with the winches (maybe secure it with cargo straps)and haul the boat and keel together onto the dry.

cable

hello joerg, ok, if you are not going under then do not remove the cable from the winch. it will be way easier to sling the keel if one end is off the bottom and you are using the boat as a float for the keel. Sorry I panicked. Let me know what happens. Good luck drew john
