Can anyone tell me what C22 rudder is made of? It has a few chips on the edges and I'd like to repair and paint it. Thanks Dan

Mostly

Fiberglass, and I think that there may be some wood in the inside. I know that if there are cracks in the edges, your rudder can soak in water and crack more until it breaks. I just dinged mine with the prop. It's a small one and I fixed it with some epoxy putty, sand paper and then some paint.

plywood

Older rudders start with plywood core, filler added then fiberglass covered. Some use polyester to repair some use epoxy, If you break it I would suggest you use epoxy for the repair. There are a lot of repaired rudders out there. One way is to use all thread rods as dowels for the fixed rudders. Several folks I know have repaired rudders this way the rudders are going strong after several years. It will make the rudder heavy though. New fixed rudders are a whooping 18 lbs and have NO wood in the core. Marine Tex is a good choice for rudder repairs. Trust me when I say your not alone and will make many such repairs on the rudder.

BANG!

Our C22 rudder had cracks that letter water in. The core rotted. In a heavy wind the rudder broke off at the waterline with a loud bang. Exciting few moments. If you suspect that the core has been compromised then get a new rudder. These older C22 rudders are infamous for core rot and breaking. The new ones are foam core.
