C22 or C25?

Since our Vagabond 14 is a tight fit with me, my wife, and our 2 kids (age 2 and 4), we are planning to buy a larger boat. Our plan is to keep it trailerable, but get some enclosed space and amenities (a head is high on my wife's list <g>).We are debating between the C22 and C25, probably 80's vintage. I know all of the objective differences (weight, layout, etc.), but would appreciate some advice from those who've been there. Are we liable to decide that the 22 is too small for day and weekend sails with 4 people? Or will we end up thinking that towing the bigger 25 is too much hassle?Thanks in advance!Scot

Go with the 25

I sometimes feel that our Capri 22 is too small with just the wife and 1 child. If you can afford it, and can tow it safely, I would opt for the 25, and suffer through occasionally feeling like you have too much boat. I'm sure that if you ultimately concluded that the 25 was too big, you could always find someone with a 22 who was willing to swap boats.

Scot, Since your wife's comfort level is a major factor, go with the 25 if you can afford/tow it. We have aC-22, and although we thorougly enjoy it, the porta-potti is hardly ever used. My wife refuses to use it because it takes a bit of manuevering to use it in the cramped space it's it. I believe the C-25 has a walk-in style head that should do rather nicely. Also a factor to consider, on a larger boat, things happen a bit slower, so unless you're just being plain careless, you usually have more time to recover from any mistakes you might make.Good Luck !

On the other hand.....

You probably can rent both a 22 and a 25 at the marina close to the San Diego airport. Give them a try before making the purchase. Then consider that in Riverside, you may be trailering thru heavy trafic, and driving over mountains and across deserts to get to good sailing sites. The 22 has a distinct advantage when it comes to trailering, launching, and storing.

C22 for towing

We have recently moved up to a 25 from a 22. The 22 is best for towing and getting the mast up and down. Our 25 is in a wetslip becouse towing it is a bear!! We loved our 22, but anything over two nights with two kids is a bit much!

The portapotti comment is a real good point. It is an awfully small space up there in the 22. My wife & I love the 22 for just ourselves, but it's not feasible to take guests over nite and even with 1 or 2 of your own kids it's gets real small real fast. After one season on an ocean mooring with the 22, we're looking for a 25 or 27. BUT, we're not complaining too badly; the 22 is a blast to sail !!!

6 hour cruiser -22

we, the captain and myself, find the 22 an excellent day sailer, and enjoy below for a break or nap. we have a 1988 that we bought 3 years ago from the origional owner, and the pop-up top, stove, potti and table are still in NEVER used condition. We think it's a great comfortable daysailer, and if w were 30" tall probably a good cruiser.yes yes, people cross oceans in 14' rowboats etc. etc. and hike for weeks with everything on their back, but us average folk a 22 is a pup tent, sure it'll keep ya dry, ya can sleep in it, but do ya wanna sail IN a pup tent. the cockpit of the 22 is even tight for 4, unless ya tie the kids off behind the tiller
