C22 Mainsail

Has anyone ever bought a sail from Masthead Sailing Gear in St. Petersburg, FL ...??

After some web surfing it appears they have the least expensive C22 main about $500 with shipping. Others appear in the mid $500 and a couple I found were over $600. All appear to be 5 oz, sails.

After splurging for a new headsail, the semi-blown out mainsail just looks like it needs to be retired....

wow, thought I would have tons of "I bought here, paid that" responses.....It appears under $500 is hard if not impossible to come by, The sail on the link appears to be a decent value..

Ok, how about sail weight, after researching all morning I see sails made out of 4.5, 5. 5.5 and even 6 oz Dacron. How do you know what you need and what is best for you wind

I assume with lighter winds you would like a lighter weight cloth, but I'm just guessing at this point. Out here in Arizona at Lake Pleasant the wind is light to moderate 80% of the time...

In a crosscut dacron sail, by far the biggest expense is the sailcloth. There are many options for sailmakers, and the quality/price can run all over the map. Hard to tell from the pictures alone, but it appears well made. 5oz cloth will be OK for a C22 mainsail.

Thanks, that's why I was looking for some first had feedback of what people consider good sail makers...I'd prefer not to have to replace it in 2 or 3 years...

I see that most of the well known sail sites seem to make the sail to order and state that you will need to provide measurements after you place the order. That's one reason I'm a bit concerned going with this pre-made sail. Am I 100% assured it will fit my application or was it made for an earlier or later generation of the Catalina 22

Masthead is located relatively near me, and for what it's worth I've heard good things about them. But that's about the best I can do ya.

As far as "I bought here, paid that" ...

Last month, I bought a new Rolly Tasker main (and 110) from sailwarehouse.com. I went with the "coastal" model: 5.5 oz Dacron, two full battens and two partials, and two reef points. It's a more durable looking sail than the one in your link, but it ran me $695.

I think, no I KNOW, that when I get another sail of any kind, it will be specifically designed for the boat, or come from a smaller loft that doesn't have too much to do. The last headsail I ordered from a BIG sail loft in Annapolis, (one that we're all probably familiar with), they cut the sail fully two feet too long in the luff. I ran that wretched rag up the stay and my jaw about fell off. Not the least of which it was a 'Yankee-cut' genoa which is worthless to me, (they forgot that detail in the ad), when I called back the bloke tried to act like I couldn't read a simple tape measure. When I blew his bull**** out of the water with my notes and pictures, (I keep incredible records), his parting excuse was, "Well, let's not start blaming someone else about this", which meant that yes, THEY were surely the ones that can't seem to read a tape measure, and still burnt me for the shipping back and forth, and they were the obvious screw up. I won't use their name on here, poor form, but I would build a sail out of Katrinna tarps before I used these people again. Struck me as being too busy.
And again, one chance folks. Hope they save that 750 bucks for hard times.

Go to a personal loft, or order a sail that is made for the boat. Less grief..


And oh hell yeah I burn their name UP on the docks. I've got a big mouth. And for some strange reason, people tend to listen. It's like I allus time say, they got me on a couple of bucks, but I'll cost them ten THOUSAND dollars before it's done. The revenge is always mine..

That was a good laugh...

There are no lofts here in Arizona, I guess I'll spend a little more and have something made with all the proper measurements.

The one thing that concerned me about the sail in the link was that the slugs appeared sewn on and on my sail there's a nut and bolt (for a lack of a better description). I guess I could run into a heap of trouble if one of slugs broke and with the blistering AZ sun the ties they use to secure the slugs to the sail, may not last as long as the sail could.

I guess in the end it's about $150 difference using a major sail loft, probably money well spent as some provide 3 year warranties...

got mine at mack sails and love it incredible quality should last me for years.
