The bolts that hold (held) the lower half of my rudder to the upper half broke and the lower piece sank into the wild blue. Has anyone fabricated a piece for this? I'm thinking of making one out of wood. Any suggestions on material/dimensions would be greatly appreciated. Mike

Did this happen

while you were under sail? I'm curious to know how you dealt with it, if it did.

rudder

hello mike the rudder is a one peice rudder. as i recall it has a core of 1 inch plywood that has been shaped and covered with epoxy putty of some type. no reason why you can't make a new one. john

Approximate dimensions?

Does anyone know about how far below the waterline the rudder needs to go? It did happen while I was under sail with about a 10 knot wind. The boat was totally out of control. I was able to lower the main and jib fairly quickly and motored back using the throttle to steer (not an easy task) Here is a photo of what is left.

Monday

I'll measure mine tomorrow and send it along Monday. Mine's a '73, but I reckon it'll be close enough.

C22 Rudder

Have you tried Catalina Direct(www.catalinadirect.com) to see if they have a replacement rudder?

Here's the measurements

Mike, now mine's a one piece rudder, so you'll have to extrapolate. Aft edge from top to bottom, not including tiller handle: 60 5/8 in. Bottom of rudder width: 15 3/4 in. Width at H20 Line: 11 3/8 in. Forward edge from H20 line to bottom: 32 1/4 in. Forward edge from H20 line to top: 271/2 in. Top of rudder width: 6 3/4 in. The water line on mine is 4 inches below the bottom edge of the bottom pintle. At the water line, the rudder leading edge moves aft at an angle of about 3 degrees. Above that it is plumb with the world. Is this confusing enough? Hope it helps.
