Hey All, went out to sail for the first time this year, and had a wonderful time except the keel winch seems to have failed. My wife was lowering the keel, and it took off and speedily unwound, knocking her on the knuckles. the keel does not want to stay retracted now. is this thing shot, or am i missing something i should know? i believe this winch is original on my 1976 C22. Thank you in advance

Blew the clutch

the winch on the C22 is a 1,000 lb rated "working winch" that has a clutch mechanism in addition to the ratchet. It would seem that the clutch mechanism has departed and no longer provides the braking function. I would just buy a new one, since it is approaching 30 years old. www.catalinadirect.com

free wheeling

I had this happen to me once and try as I might with the winch on the work bench I couldn't get it to fail. Then with one grain of sand,, wola! yep one grain of sand between the clutches and it would let go and free wheel. Not saying this is your problem, but letting you know that something as small as a grain of sand in the clutch will let it go into free wheel. I've never relaxed my hold on the handle since then. Also, it has never happened again. Let us know what you find out. (Oh just in case your wondering my winch is one of the newer models)

winch

hello randy, the fiber winch friction disk glued itself to the frame,or the drum (I don't remember witch one) but I removed the winch and freed it up. it has worked fine so far.you have nothing to loose, take it apart and see what happens. john
