I am looking into purchasing a '92 C22 with wing keel. Just wondering any pro/con of this keel configuration vs. swing keel (other than mainteance issues)? Particular interested in initial stability, upwind performance, and resell. Please direct me to archive if this is a FAQ. Thanks. Also, this is a fresh water lake boat with 4HP O.B. I am planning on using it for coastal crusing. Will the 4 HP will be adequate for coastal water, bigger waves and higher wind. It is 2cycle Envirude. Thanks to all. Jeff from N.C.

O.B. Motor selection

Jeff, I bought my 84 C-22 in Miami, Fl new and had choice of engines. At that time the O.B.Motors were rated H.P. at the powerhead and a 7.5 4 stroke Honda with an alternator for battery charging is what I felt was necessary to cruise Biscayne Bay. That weighs in at 77lbs. and really sucks for trying to put it up on your shoulder to hang it on the motor mount. I have just this year bought a new Mercury 5H.P. 4 stroke long shaft (quieter than 2-stroke and better on fuel) and weighs in at 44lbs. (easier as I get older) They are available with alternators as an option if you must insist. They advertise that the H.P. rating is at the prop not the power head. Now the good part... The 7.5 could only give me approx. 3.4 knots of speed with keel locked down but the 5 gives me 5+ knots without even thinking hard and without the cavitation of the prop. I beleive the 4 or 5 long shaft motor for coastal cruising would be appropriate for your needs.

C-22 HP Issue

I use a yamaha 4 hp off the coast of Calif. and have no problem fighting the tides ,etc. I think much heavier would really make the transom drag and cut your Sailing performance.
