I am considering storing my fuel can in the cockpit, under the tiller, instead of the fuel locker. The reason being is that I would like to utilize that lazerette for storage of other things like life jackets. If I did store the fuel can in the cockpit, I was going to construct a couple of wooden bars to run horizontally in front of the can to prevent movement, and a cover of some type to shade the can from the sun. I would like some opinions from others since I haven't started this project yet. Thanks

fuel storage

I've considered the same set up and actually bought a small rubbermaind container that holds a 3 gallon can perfectly and fits under the tiller and between the seats snuggly. But it made things a little cluttered so I moved it back into the port locker and ran the fuel line up through the transom. The whole concept of cans still bothers me though. I am now considering having a narrow aluminum tank made that will hug the transom wall and can be permanently fixed with proper venting and an external fill. I am also interested in adding another hatch access to the port locker to make it easier to access gear stored there. Has anyone done this or considered? thanks, Chad

Mike: Sounds good to me. I place my plastic remote tank under the tiller at the transom without any tying down or shade and it works well, but your idea may even be better (Someday I may rig a bungee to hold mine down and back as it does move around if I get knocked down by a strong unexpected gust). Best thing about the fuel tank in the cockpit is that it keeps it from ever spilling into the bilge or for fumes to get into the cabin, if it is one the the older boats without a separate compartment for fuel, like my 1974 model. With fuel in the cockpit, keep open flames away! Dick
