Hello, I need to replace the forstay on my 81 C22. The current one has 'meathooks' (I think) because I didn't realize that the furling genoa needs to be raised all the way up so that the 'wrap stop' engages and the foil turns AROUND the forestay instead of TWISTING the forestay. Anyway, Catalina Direct has the forstay for about $65. Is that the best deal, or ?? Finally, how difficult is it to take the bad forstay out of the furler and install the new one? The mast is sitting on top of the boat (and under a cover). Thanks, Barry

pro-furl

Hello Bayard, Good guess, I do have a pro furl furler. I wasnt clear in my earlier post, the problem with my genoa is that when the tack of the sail is shackled to the base of the furler, the head of the sail does not engage the wrap stop. When I figured that out I made a pennant out of rope to get the genoa higher. That works great, but the forestay has already been damaged. The furler extrusion is one long piece. When the weather gets better I will take a long look at the how the extrusion mounts on the stay. Thanks for your comments. Barry

Thanx for the info Barry

It is good to know about this potential problem with Pro Furl furlers. I have a freind who may consider putting one onto a roughly twenty-eight foot boat. Furhter, did you put the pennant on the bottom or on the top of the genoa? And do you think it makes any difference whether it goes on the top or the bottom?

ProFurl

Bayard This is NOT a potential problem with ProFurl. In fact, the instruction manual very clearly covers it. You put a pendant on the sail as shown in the instructions if your sail luff length is less than the hoist. The advantage of the ProFurl is that you don't have to worry about halyard lead angles at the top of the mast because of the wrap stop part of their design. Other manufacturers have their own ways of doing this, no one's better than others, just different strokes. Don't hold it against ProFurl. We're VERY happy with our unit (LCI32) on our C34. No maintenance, operates flawlessly. Stu

proful

Hello, I am not blaming profurl for my problem. It was strictly my fault. I bought the boat used, and had to put the mast up, and sails on myself. Since I had no experience with furlers (or sailing in general) I had no idea that I would need a pennant (and I didn't find one with all the other stuff that came with the boat). Anyway, I put the pennant on the bottom because it allowed me to get the sail higher, and the more important reason: I could hoist the sail unti I was sure the wrapstop engaged, then calculate the length of the pennant. I'm happy with the performance of the profurl unit, but I have nothing to compare it to. Barry
