I recently experienced a near knockdown(far enough over to allow a wave to wash over the port side and partially fill the small cubbyhole just above the port seat.) Later,I observed a small amount of water in the area benieth the cockpit inside the boat.I inspected the seal on the storage lid and it seemed intact but when I chected the inside of the cubbyhole I noticed a seperation along the top of it which is a direct opening to the inside of the boat.Is this normal? It is the same on the starboard side also.Is this part of the gas tank ventilation system? And finally, Would it create a problem if I went ahead and sealed these openings up since I prefer having the water on the outside rather than on the inside? Your input is appreciated!!!

Cubby Holes

I have an old 1977 C22 that had wood boxes in the sides of the cockpit. I ended up making a mold and making new ones out of fiberglass. I sealed mine in with 3M 4200 and trimed them out in teak. Good Luck, Jay

Coaming Compartments

Razorback: We usually call the cubbyholes coaming compartments. I do know about the cracks that you are talking about. They are thin cracks around the top of the fiberglass compartment liners that you can see if you are in the sail compartment or in the area that the galley slides into. I haven't sealed mine, because I thought that they might let some air move through the boat when is is in the slip, however, I do have Naugahide covers that cover the compartments and keep the teak from being exposed to the rain, so I probably don't get much air moving through them. Anyhow, unless your boat is perfect in every other way, I wouldn't bother to seal up these little cracks, but you might want to check on a storm jib for days that are windy enough to heel a boat so that water comes into your cockpit. Razorback: For some reason, my response to your question, appears in the menu as a question labeled "Coaming Seal". Must be because I used the editing option. Sorry. Dick
