In a following sea we get a lot of water coming up throught the scuppers. Any suggestions on how to stop this? Thanks in advance to all.

How much do you weigh??

Okay, mabye not... at least I hope you don't weigh 600lbs plus! This is strange because I never get water coming in mine (79 C38), not even when loaded for cruising and running in 6 foot seas in the stream (I also have 6 golf cart batteries under the helm seat). What qualifies as "a lot" of water? I've gotten a puddle there -mabye a quart- when heeled 35deg plus but thats it. I guess you could make some plugs with a string attached so they could be easily pulled if you get pooped. Good luck!

Cat 38 Scuppers

I have yet to experience backflow from the cockpit drains (scuppers) into the cockpit from followings seas, but on some heel angles I used to receive some degree of flow. Last year when I was doing a major overhaul of the steering system, I crossed the cockpit drain lines, port drain to starboard thru hull, etc, and this eliminates most of the problem. This may help the follow seas situation.

Cockpit Water

Well, thanks for the suggestions. By a lot of water I mean enough to soak my shoes. Maybe part of the problem is too many folk toward the rear of the cockpit. Have a couple of those seats on the rear railings. Hummm, crossing the lines has been suggested and maybe that's the best way to address this. I have seen a couple of 38's with a wood grate in the back of the cockpit and suspected that's why the grates were there.

I Always Had Water

I always had water in the cockpit of my 85' C-38 (#297) if the boat was near, at, or over hull speed. I kinda liked it as I knew we were going fast when the water came in. Feet were always clean too. It would be up to 2" deep at times even if the boat not heeled. The boat floated on it's lines and was not overloaded. I did think about cross connecting but was afraid the cockpit wouldn't drain if the boat was heeled. I have seen some C-38s with a ping-pong ball valve in the cockpit drains. Don't know if they worked or not. Rodney S/V Sashay C-42 #567 SF Bay
