Living in South Florida where winds are often light in the summer, I am currently looking a buying a 30' sailboat. Recently I have inquired about a couple of C30's, one with a standard rig and one with a tall rig. How much "better" does the tall rig boat sail? What are the upsides and downsides?

Tall Rig vs Std

I have a 1988 C30 tall rig. Generally, I think the TR is faster...more sail area. The draft is deeper, so if you sail in shallow waters alot, you may want to reconsider. I can't remember the exact difference in draft, but mine draws 5'4". Also, the TR includes a bowsprit. I think these are the main differences. The TR is definitely faster! I suggest considering the size engine, and get the larger. Mine is a 23hp Universal (larger option when purchased), and I would like even a little more. Tall Rig is fast.

Our '81 30 TR can't be beat by the 310s or 320s at our lake particularly with the kite involved. Keep the bottom clean and its a great, fast boat. A reefed main at 15 kts actually increases speed. Also, the bowsprit, the wood trim and the colored hulls of this vintage, really make for a nice looking yacht.
