frustrated, frustrated, frustrated, Looking for info on a 5411, have just rebuilt the bottom end (inserts, rings etc). reassembled, reset valve clearances, retimed injector pump, checked injector spray pattern, glowed for 30 sec, 45 sec............. 2 minutes, she cranks over with good compression, blows mid-grey to black smoke out the exhaust, but just wont bang off. have tried all I know and can think of, ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE. thanks for the suggestion - fuel

thanks for the assist, all help is greatly appreciated. ... fuel delivery seems ok, I pressure bled the system to the injector pump, then cracked the delivery lines above the injector and decompression cranked the engine until fuel was being delivered. about the only thing that didnt go according to plan was when I tightened the injector return line collars down I crushed the washer under them, but the return line ports were aligned. If you have any further thoughts pls dont hesitate to list them, as I said, Ive just about run out of ideas. mark

Recheck valve clearances

and recheck valve timing in case you have the camshaft out of time. Diesels only have campression, valve clearance and timing, and fuel delivery/timing to worry about. Good luck!

many thanks, a valve checking I will go

Many thanks for the response, when I reinstalled all shafts all timing points on the gearing aligned, the only doubt was on the cam shaft, it is punched with two marking points, one that aligns with the tooth the other with the valley, I aligned the top marks(tooth), do you consider that a valley difference would cause the problem in timing. when reassembling; the head gasket kit (kubota z500) came with the gasket and a metal gasket shim (I assumed that I should fit the shim as well), in retrospect (good old 20/20 hindsight)perhaps the shim was for installation if the head or block had been machined, would you consider the compression has been reduced below flash point due to the greater space between head and block?, your further thoughts would be appreciated. Bent Push Rods

The 5411 is one tempermental SOB I hated mine so much I cursed it daily. The manuel says it will run as long as the cylinders are within like x number concentricity (I forget the actual number) and mine was well within range. I dumped a fortune in upper end and by all rights it should have fired as well . Hogwash I say.I dumped it and bought new. But I have since spoke to a few old salts who tell be you have to have your timing respectably close to mfg specs prior to the initial firing or you can bend the new pushrods. Sounds to me like you might have done that.

exhaust elbow

Our 5411 runs and runs. Pretty tough little engine. I had similar symptoms (not after a rebuild though) and it was the exhaust elbow being clogged up. Makes sense, air and fuel can't get in if they can't get out. Check the exhaust elbow. Let us know what you find out. Good luck!
