All four of the spark plugs on my atomic 4 were rusted. When Marina mechanic attempted to replace them, two of the four were so rusted that they broke in half, at the thread. He may have to pull the head to replace them. I am concerned that if he pulls the head it will be an expensive road we are golng down with a 35 year-old engine. I am looking for the least amount of expenditure out of this situation. I am considering putting an outboard motor-mount bracket on the boat along with a 9.9 horse long shaft. Does anyone have any thoughts and or other solutions? Thanks, john

John, were the plugs rusted from the outside? How did the ones that did come out

If they looked OK, then a head rework while it is out for the broken plug fix should not be terribly expensive and may very well fix you up for a lot less than $2500 for a new outboard and bracket.

C-24 Atomic

Most of the time just the ceramic breaks, you still have the base which is steel . I would try spraying the plug with a product called Aerokroil it's like super DW-40(maybe misspelled). Let it sit for a day or so, put a short socket on it with a cheater. It should break loose. When I worked offshore on the oil platforms, thats pretty much what we did. Salt ate everything. If your engine guy didn't try something like this and just told you, dude we need more money yo fix this. More power to him and shame on you

Food for thought

Just another thought,(just aggravates me what your mechanic did). Next time, run your engine for a few minutes before trying to remove the plugs.Let the head warm up (and not the toilet)just hotter than you would like to touch it-we don't want to lose any skin doing this and let the head cool down a little, just enough to work on. The plugs are a mild steel which will cool down faster than the cast head. The plugs will condense and the head is still expanded from the heat, try spraying a little lube in it also while its warm but not to hot cause it will evaporate and get into your nose, then your head and next thing its - Dear I have a killer headache, not tonight.Always worked on the old vette heads or whatever kinda car I had.
