I want to buy a used C-22 and looked at VIN numbers on transom and they looked like they were scratched in (boat was painted over gel coat). Were the VIN numbers stamped with clean font characters like Boston Whalers or were they hand tooled? Also if I have a sail number can I find the original VINs to cross check? Thanks, Fredrik

C22 sail number and VIN number
The numbers on the transom were just freehand and even hard to see on many C22s. There are only four numbers in the VIN that are the sail number. After the production exceeded 4 numbers they dropped the first number. As an example, my boat Happy Daze, is an '85 with sail and serial number of 12712 but the only numbers that show on the VIN are 2712. I'll try to add a link to C22 years and numbers. My numbers are on the cockpit side of the transom.
They are on a small steel plate affixed to the inside of the transom. They are the same as the sail numbers. My 1980 # is 9223. There are also numbers ingraved on the starboard outboard side of the tramsom in the upper corner.
