Sea Scout Ship 300

We are Sea Scout Ship 300, B.S.A. We have a C 22 that was raced last weekend and during the races the port side stay located furtherest aft began to pull the deck up approximately a half inch before the sheets were released and the sails were dropped when movement was noticed on the starboard side stay in the same position. We are seeking advise on the best way to make a repair to the boat so that the stays are secure and functional. We are also seeking suggestions on the best way to make a back stay where tension can be applied as we get zero or little bend in the mast. In addition, we are looking for a way to make a traveller that really works. We have two old C 22's and are trying to make them safe and competitive so it is fun for the youth to compete in regional regattas and cruise as well. Sea Scouting is possibly the best kept secret in the Boy Scouts of America for young men AND women ages 14 to 21. Check us out at www.korrnet.org/ship300. Checkout sea scouting at www.seascout.org. Look forward to receiving advise at ship300sails@yahoo.com. Me, I am an old thistle sailor and new to Catalina 22's. Thanks so much for your consideration.

Re/22 stays

If you expect to race in C22 association certified races, be sure you check out their requirements before making changes. Check www.catalina22.org/ as a starter. Also check out nearby C22 fleet folks. Re/shroud problem, look for some way to tie the plates down from inside the cabin. Maybe your bulkhead is loose, or maybe you need to figure some way to put in turnbuckles. Also, Catalina Direct sells some heavy duty chainplates that are nice. Re/backstay, there are split backstays available. Re/traveler, the ones I see in Arizona are standard except that they are cleated over near the gunnels, or at least tied in there with turning blocks to cleat further forward-- this is where you really need to check with rules of the association if you expect to race with them. Good project! Dick

Deck problem

If the chainplate is pulling the deck up then you have a bigger problem than simply beefing up the chainplates. The deck should not be rising at all. You probably have rot in the deck and it must be fixed. Stronger bolting to a rotten deck wont solve it.
