C-22 retro fit trailer

I am looking at an 84 C-22 it is in good shape but the trailer it is on is not a C-22 trailer. It does fit well and is in good shape as well. It does not have a shoe (or what ever you call it) for the keel to rest in during trailering. Is there any way to find out the best location for the "shoe". I have a friend that will weld anything I need onto the trailer but were should I place it. I understand that there might be a bad location for it. In otherwords a location that would be a problem during launch and retreval. Any one out there had to solve this problem?Art <)))><

Keel Rest

Art, My trailer for my '86 has a small bunk board about 8' x 15' and bracket bolted to the cross support. I don't think I would weld it in place because it helps to get it out of the way when lowering the keel for inspection and/or removal.Charlie

Trailer Rest for Swing Keel

Mine is located where it supports the far back part of the keel which it is cranked up before moving from water to trailer. When its on the trailer on land, I let the tension off the keel winch so keel rests firmly on support. Probably want the support long enough that it will support the keel when the boat is not fully forward on the trailer (the usual case when removing boat on steep ramp), or if it slides back a ways on the trailer.

Keel Support

I just purchased a 1985 model C22. The gentlemen that sold me the boat said the trailer was not original to this boat, but as in your case the boat fits well on it. My keel was supported by one of those rubber wedges that are on the wench pedestal. I was not fond of the idea of trying to get the keel to center on this rubber wedge, so I removed the wedge and welded four 3.5 inch pieces of flat 1.5 x 3/8 bar cross the v-crossbar where the wedge was centered at the bottom. I then cut a couple 2x4 boards and bolted them to the crossbar. I have loaded my boat twice now, and it seems to center well and loads easy. I got this idea from a McGregor trailer at our sailing club. DavidH-16C-22Sunfish
