I am new to my boat. The Pop top does not seem to be secured down. Is there suppose to be some type of tie down to keep it from raising up and down with the boat motion?

Fastners

Mine has a T-Bar Hatch fastner on each side. Placed about the middle of the hatch.

Too Heavy

I also Have a 22 and the pop top isn't secured. But then again, the thing is heavy enough that it doesn't need anything to hold it down. I've never had it raise on its own while sailing.

MIne has 4 fasteners

My 1986 C22 has four fasteners, one in each corner. The top is heavy but I would not feel comfortable without it being locked down. In the unlikely event of a knockdown that top coming open would add a lot to your troubles. My two cents. P.S. We use the poptop enough that I am going to add the CD lift package for it so that it isn't so darn heavy to lift.

Install pop-top dogs

My '81 Catalina 22 has two dogs (port/starboard) - as discussed already, to prevent opening during the unexpected knock down you need to secure the poptop. I installed CD gas struts this summer - worth every penny. CD recommends installing additional dogs for security but so far I have not had any problems with the two.

one on either side. i'd like to get the gas struts also as I've heard it makes it alot easier to lift that thing...

Chris on the Gas Struts

Chris: I have seen a boat with the gas struts, and the owners love them, but let me ask you a few questions. When the pop top is down, how much do you have to lift to get the top to start to move up? I can see how the struts would do the job once the top is on its way up, and the struts have somewhat of a vertical angle, but when the top is the whole way down, I don't see how it can exert much force in the vertical direction. Also, how much stress is on the pop top when it is in the down position? Does it twist the pop top from its normal position? Relative to the dogs, did you get "dog catchers" from CD? If you did, what are they made out of? I have the 2 dogs on the pop top, and 2 more that I installed onto the front hatch, and I made some dog catchers out of velcro for the front hatch, but the self stick adhesive is having truoble sticking to the fiberglass of the underside of the hatch. It would be handy to have the dogs stay out of the way until the hatches are lowered. Thanks, Aldo

Dog Catchers a great idea

Aldo, I have the same problem with my 4 dogs on the pop top. They get in the way of lifting. It is a real pain in the !@#$%! I thought of a velcro solution but it sounds like yours didn't work. Any one find a solution for this?

Randy....

Randy: As I wrote, the dog catchers that I made were made out of the velco with the self-stick adhesive, at least the side that goes onto the hatch, is self-stick. The other side is just regular velcro. I'm going to try to use some silicone sealer to help stick the self-stick velco onto the hatch. This is what I did with the velcro for the screen that goes around that hatch and that has worked well. Even this past weekend, those dog catchers were hanging and didn't work and it was irritating. I haven't added any dog catchers to the pop top yet, but it certainly needs them too. Aldo
