Problem - The winch for my keel cable is centered not directly above the tube the cable travels through to the keel. This forces the cable to one end of the winch spool, causing the cable to overlap on the spool until it slips towards the center of the spool. I bought the boat used. The previous owner said he replaced the winch earlier in the year because the breaking mechanism did not work. The winch seems to be lined up with the right bolt holes but I can't imagine that it was designed not to line up directly over the cable tube. Has anyone dealt with this issue? Thanks.

Slotted Mounting Holes . . .

check to see if the winch has slotted mounting holes. This will allow you a bit of adjustment so you can line up the winch a little better. Regards, Ted

Winch alignment

Mike: Mine (1980 C22) was the same. I shimmed one end of the winch to make it more level & square with the tube. This allowed the cable to track better & it did't crowd to one end of the drum. I think it took about 1/4" or more of shim material. Regards, Bob B.

Thanks - But no go

Bob & Ted - Thanks for your replies. However, it is level so no shimming will improve things and the slotted mounting holes are for athwartships movement and not fore & aft like I need. I expect that I will have to live with it.

Not So

If you send me the winch at the end of the season I will be glad to slot the holes in the proper direction.e-mail me @ rivette@tds.net. I have access to several machine shops and have finished all my projects for the time being.

No problem ???

Hi Mike: I guess no harm is being done as long as the cable is not being damaged or wearing a groove in the cable tube or volcano. (I don't know if the MK II has a volcano) Before I was aware of the keel cable turning ball, I epoxied a brass bushing into the volcano to protect it. I still have to check the turning ball this winter. I must have one in place because the cable looks like new after 12 years. I managed to unwind the winch & pull the cable out from the bottom far enough to examine it. You can use a rat tail, drill press, hacksaw or combination of the above to slot the holes in the winch base. Regards, Bob B. 1980 C22

Turning Ball

Timm - Thanks for the offer. I have a neighbor with a drill press so I will purse that route. Bob - About your comment on the turning ball -- I bought my 7 year old boat and checked my cable and turning ball. The cable looked fine (original), but the turning ball did have a groove on part of the surface. So don't count on the cable looking good as an indication of a good turning ball. Thanks for your reponse.
