We dry-sail our MK-II out of the Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego. It's cheaper to rent the storage space than a slip, and the club has 2 electric hoists and electric mules to move the boat around the yard. We also save on bottom maintenance and cleaning expenses. We keep the boat fully rigged and to launch, I simply disconnect the back stay, move the boom far to starboard, and attach my sling, and lift the boat off the trailer. The sling is made from 1/2" double braided line that is capable of lifting 4 times the weight of our boat, so there is plenty of safety factor built in.

Boat yard travellifts us very wide staps for a reason... to spread the load.
A C-22 MK-II may not weigh much, however all of the load is on a 1/2".
You might want to rethink that and use 2" or 3" straps.

I recommend slings made from webbing instead

Don: I agree with SeaRanch. I think that you are putting lots of concentrated stress on your boat. I'm not the kind of person that says do what I do, but in this case I think that you should take a look at the way that we lift our boat. I do this every year when I touch-up the bottom paint, and over this past weekend I took a few photos for you. A few years ago I purchased the 3 inch wide yellow straps shown in the photos. I still put carpet between the straps and the hull, as suggested by someone else on this fourm, when I originally purchased the straps. The straps have plenty of safety factor, but if I had to do it again, I might buy even wider straps.

Before I bought the straps, I used to lift the boat with chain. To pad the chain, I used strips of wood paneling against the chain, then carpet between the paneling and the hull. The straps are much easier to work with than the chain.

I also suggest replacing the rope used above your slings with chain. There is a special grade of chain for lifting.

I don't feel comfortable with what you are doing. Maybe no one is on, under, or near your boat when you are lifting or moving it, but I still think that it could be very dangerous if one of your ropes broke.

I goofed on my original post, the line are 1", not 1/2". I also spoke with Catalina on this issue as I too had concerns with compression, and they didn't have any concerns. I agree straps would be nicer, but the length is very critical to keep the boat level. Much easier to adjust the length with line. I'm in the process of making a carbon fiber/epoxy composite mount that will be secured to the center 4 keel bolts,(wing keel), with a lifting eyebolt in the middle. This will attach to another lifting ring about 5' above the keel with 2 lines that will run through the scuppers and back up to the rear cleats. This will keep the boat level,(they're slightly tail heavy), when lifting. I used this arrangement on my Capri-18, which was copied from the Capri-22's at the club. It's a lot faster to lift and launch with this arrangement, and it stores nicely under the floor in the keel sump. I'm taking some pictures of the project and will post them when I finish it.

Don, I have one of those Capri 22 lifting cable rigs that came with our boat. I've never used it but I know the prior owner did. Let me know if you need any measurements.
