I am wanting to do a BVI trip with my kids. But my son has a 3 yr old & a 1 year old. Has anyone attempted this with little ones? The prospect of a very active 3 yr old on board little boy is a concern. Your advice is a great help.

Great time for them to go to the grandparents!
I would wait 3-4 more years.
In the mean time get them used to being in a harness while in the cockpit.

Not much for kids that small to do. Too small for bar stools and every where you go you will need to use a dink. The trash on a boat is bad enough I can't imagine diapers.

My experience with kids that small is they lack the strength and reactions to save themselves in even mildest seaway and would be constantly taking tumbles due to the motion of the boat. The result is misery all round.

Have they been out sailing yet or would this be the first time? I would see how they do on a boat first before making such a decision. I think that there is nothing wrong with small children on a boat; just have to adapt schedule to suit their needs. There are lots of sandy beaches to play on and distances in the BVI's are not great so it's not a real long day. Go to BVI when there is a second full moon in a month so you can see the stilt walkers at the blue moon festival. Really worth it!

If your kids are experienced on your boat, no reason not to take them. As noted, dinghies are a must, rare are docks except at Spanish Town which is NOT a place to go, since it's HOT.

But there are plenty of fun places to take the kids. Leverick Bay has a great pool. Most places have restaurants, not only bars.

Your kids, your choice. :)

I love sailing with kids and have taken mine to the BVI several times.

My criteria is that they are out of diapers, not wetting the bed (or will wear pullups) and able to follow directions. (Imagine if they pull a line out of the self locking winch at the wrong time ...) That said, I know people that sail with little kids - I think it helps in that case to have a few adults who are not sailing, just keeping an eye on the kids.

Be sure to take a comfortable life jacket for each kid and allow for plenty of beach time!

Here's a post I wrote about sailing with kids: http://www.bvibound.com/2008/05/25/sailing-with-kids/
