Charter Qualifications
Some joke that the only qualification one needs to charter in the BVI's is a credit card. Not exactly true, but not too far from it.I have direct experience only with Sunsail in the BVI, and with a couple of other outfits in the SanJuan Islands (Washington). In all those cases, the company wanted a sailing experience resume from me.I listed any and all previous boating/sailing experience, in particular any previous charters. They are looking for (among other things) experience with generally similar sized boats, and generally similar sailing conditions. That said, sailing and navigating conditions in the BVI are pretty benign compared to many other parts of the world. And to them, experience with a 22ft boat will probably get your foot in the door with a 40ft boat, etc. They will access your experience/knowledge level to some degree during the checkout and briefing, and may request that you show them that you can handle the vessel getting away from the dock, around the harbor and back to the dock. They won't ask you to raise sails, trim for speed, heave-to, reef, anchor, or mix a pain-killer (look it up - you'll love it!). If you totally "clutz-out", they may require that you hire a captain for a day, or some other period, but I've never really heard where anyone actually had to do that - I guess most folks that aren't ready to do it just don't try, or decide that getting a captained charter might be a good way for them to learn for the next time.If you have taken any of the ASA classes, be sure to mention them in your resume/experience.The BVI can be a whole lot of fun.
