buzzed!

Happened twice to me. Driving on a long, lonely stretch of New Mexico highway (between Springer and Clayton) at about 85 mph a fighter jet came from my right at a low altitude and flew right over the top of me. Went around and did it again. And then a third time. He was clearly using me as some kind of target for the exercise he was doing.

Second time I was fly fishing in the middle of 11-mile Canyon in Colorado with two of my buddies. Out of nowhere a monstrous "BOOM" shook us to our very core. Scared the crap out of all three of us. We were simply speechless. One my buddies saw the plane just before the boom. We figured it was an Air Force Academy pilot who got a little ambitious on the throttle and moved through the sound barrier. Not supposed to do that - but he did. And we still talk about how scared we were for about 5 seconds.

Been on both ends

The most impressive buzzing I ever experienced was an F-111 buzzing us as we flew along about 500'AGL they were below us with about 500' of horizontal separation.
So they were driving down the road? :stir:

As a kid, sailing up the ICW, I think in SC, we were chugging up a long straight stretch of the ditch when a small jet flew at an altitude of about 300' over our heads on the same heading. Once it it got to the distant bend in the canal, it kept going straight and dropped a bomb. We could see it tumble down from it's belly and a plumb of dust lifted above the tree line ahead. Then another identical jet followed to drop their bomb. Another and another followed. I believe six or so jets flew that same route right over our heads and all dropped on the same field before we turned the bend and left their training field behind. I have no idea what kind of planes they were.

Around here, the Green Mountain Boys, out of Vermont, fly low and loud in what appear to be mock dog fights. Sometimes a larger bomber type plane is involved. They are infrequent and never last very long, 40 minutes to an hour and a half, maybe twice a year.

You ain't lived until you sail into the Pax river bombing range when it has gone active and the F18s are drowning out the whoop-whoop of the Range Control boats on your stern. ...would someone please turn on theVHF?

The Blue Angels show up every other year or so at the Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Mi
When practicing for the show, they sometimes fly down the Lake Michigan shoreline. It quite a sight when they are southbound at less then 500 feet.

One year, as we were coming out of the Manistee channel, we were buzzed by 4 vintage biplanes probably headed to OshKosh. They circled us twice at low altitude and continued west. Photo op and me with no camera aboard.

Several months ago 2 C5 A’s flew low level following U S 220 Hwy 30 seconds apart less than a 800 feet direct off my back porch in the mountains. Each one went to full throttle at that time when turning ang going uphill. Did not have time to take a photo but what a sight. Could have been the later models. Several folks called to ask what they were. One thought and argued it was a C 130 Hercules but said no as these had jet engine versus props.

Got buzzed on the deck by a privately owned F-104 Starfigher doing above Mach 1. Sonic boom was deafening.

Sailing around Whidbey Island we often see F18’s and P3 Orions doing T&G’s cruising about the sky’s of Washington. Sail too close to the west side of Whidbey and they will be taking off above your head. Fail to listen to the CG advisories on 22A and you might hear incoming small arms fire from the practice range.
But nothing matches the experience of a tiger cruise off the Farallons aboard a carrier and have the jets (2 - f14 tomcats ) do a low altitude super sonic pass 500 yards off the ships port side. Just watching the water behind the jets is crazy... You know it is coming but it almost knocks you down. The whole carrier vibrates.

Being a skydiver, I've been buzzed by all sorts of aircraft ranging from DC3s, DeHavilland Twin Otters, Shorts Brother's Skyvans and Russian MIG fighter-trainers.
Most memorable was not long after 9-11, when I was under canopy above Eloy, AZ.
2 F16s flew right through dropzone airspace, much too close for comfort.

~9500ft ASL over Lakeview Oregon in a hang glider, 4th of July 2010 when a (F-16?) fighter jet from Klamath Falls crossed me close enough for us to make eye contact. I learned what a fly must feel like, just before the swat :yikes: .
