I was out in Boston Harbor yesterday. There were a large number of sailboats out and, due to the wind, many were tacking across the main channel in/out of the city off Deer Island. We were on a course away from the channel either on the outskirts or even out of the channel. My friends son, who was watching alerted us...one of the small high speed cat ferries was nearly on top of us. It passed us about 50 feet away at 30-40 mph throwing a four foot wake at us. We threw the helm over to tack, just getting the bow into it before it hit us. Looking at the wake of the ferry, it had zig zagged around two other sailboats that were in the midst of the channel, then apparently the Captain had taken his ire out on us. He didn't sound a horn or anything, and I didn't have mine in reach. Now I know he is working and I am just messing around, but am I crazy or are these ferry companies / captains nuts to fail to reduce speed in traffic to avoid killing somebody? Should I notify the CG? The ferry company? I know the name of the ferry and it must be CG registered right?
