Hi all, We have been considering buying a Macgregor 26X for a few years. We are finally ready to bite the bullet and buy our first boat. The dealership has a Mac 26X 1995 with all the bells and whistles for sale. We are trying to decide whether we should buy a new one or go for the 1995 that is in good shape and completely outfitted. Is there any reason not to buy a 95? I'd appreciate any comments that would help us to make the decision. Cam

Changes since 95

There have been a number of changes (improvements?) since '95. The rudders were changed to higher aspect ratio and made longer. The rudder brackets were changed from cast aluminum to stamped stainless. The ballast tank valve was made larger and moved from the port to the starboard side. The ballast vent was moved from under the companion way step to under the V berth. The step was removed and replaced with a ladder. The electrical pannel was moved from over the V berth to the companion way bulk head. The steering mechanism was strenghtened. The deck construction was changed from balsa laminate to solid fiberglass with the addition of fiberglass stringers. The trailer is now equipped with dual safety chains. You also need to consider the condition of the sails and the motor. After 7 years, they may need replacement. Is the motor a 4 cycle? 2cycle motors will be restricted in the future. All depends on the price difference. I would not regard any of the changes as must have.
