I'm looking at sail makers and see a spectrum of specifications and prices from businesses ranging from local lofts, Catalina Direct, to Internet vendors manufacturing in China.

Can I trust these internet companies?

Try Bacon Sails. I just received a rf genoa sail that I ordered 25 days ago and am so delighted with the workmanship and it is exactly what Gary and I had talked about, even a couple of little extras than I thought at a competitive price.

Oh yes, this is a new sail.

I read all that online but it seems to pertain to the previous owner dating back to 2012. And there at least two other companies manufacturing in China.

I ordered my asymmetrical spinnaker several years ago knowing nothing about anything. (Not much has changed in that regard.) I chose fxsails partly because of price and partly because they're in South Carolina and he understands our state flag. I've been extremely happy with my purchase. Check this link. My spinnaker is featured on their homepage. http://www.fxsails.com

That being said, if I ever need sails I'll get a quote from the SBO store here. I would also talk to Joe Waters of Waters Sails. http://www.waterssails.net I've been to his shop. They make their sails in Lexington, SC.

I used a local shop for our new main as I had him do some repairs on my Genoa also. In a few years once it is used up I will have him make me a new one.

Now is not a good time to get new sails from anywhere. Most if not all lofts have sales starting in Sept or Oct so they can stay busy all winter. Now they are very busy and lead time is out about 4 to 5 weeks at least around here. I got a great price from a local loft last fall. He completed it in Feb and I gave him the order in Dec of 2015. Since he was local I saved on shipping because he is only about 15 miles away. Also a local sailor and understands our winds and conditions. If something is wrong he is known to come to your boat and check things out. If you can, wait.

At least here on the West Coast the Catalina direct sails are manufactured by

http://ullmansails.com/

They have a autumn sale that goes on every year, if you can wait

I just ordered one from them for my C30. His price is just as good as china's....but he's local (New York).
As a mater of fact, I've been so pleased with Somersetsails that I've ordered about 4 sets from them. Good sails!!!
