My current anchor rode is 30' chain (5/16") and 200' nylon. I'm looking to replace with 200' chain (5/16") spliced to nylon. As I look at the price of chain in So Cal area I'm amazed at the price. WM is $4.40 ft, smaller marine suppliers are $3.40 ft, then I found a supplier in Maine that will sell for $1.95 ft plus shipping, which is still less than WM. Is there that much profit in chain?? Or is there a quality difference?? Does anybody have a good source to buy chain?? Thanks, Bob

I find that WM has the most expensive chain prices anywhere. Try here http://1st-chainsupply.com/chain/gbbb_windlass_chain.htm WM wanted $4.59 per ft for 3/8 BBB + delivery! You can get it for well under $3.00 ft. delivered anywhere in US. It's the same manufacturer and grade.

Gypsy

Two thoughts: 1) Make sure that whatever chain you buy is appropriate for your windless chain gypsy. Get the wrong size/type chain and you'll be sorry. 2) I found that my West Marine would price match - if I showed them the price of the same item at another retailer, they would match the price. I did just that when I ran into the outrageous prices they wanted for chain. They had a catalog price, a price on the barrel in the store, a new tag on the barrel, and an even higher price in their most recent catalog - almost $2/foot more than the price on the barrel! I about exploded when they rang it up. Then I told them that Boaters World - 20 miles south - had it for $x/ft - they called and verified it, and gave it to me for that price. It doesn't hurt to ask! Chain Issues

There is a difference - bbb/proof coil chain is not nearly as strong as "high-test" chain. Each link in any chain will (should) have an imprint that tells you what kind it is. That's not to say you must buy high-test, but offers some clue as to the price difference. Also, the price of (even scrap) metal has about doubled over the past year. Seems China is moving from the middle ages to the 21st Century and building new infrastructure...supply/demand...but that is a subject for another website.... Good luck. Drew

Chain supplier above is a no go..

They only sell in 1/2 drum (400') and full drum (800'). So, unless you've got one or more people to share with it's not an option. I know because they just replied to my request for a quote saying no can do.

And BTW...

...I bought 5/16 high-test at defender.com for $2.79 a foot the other day. Coupla buck for shipping - showed up in three days.
