Blue book for CAT22s?

Pricing is a tough one - the cheaper the better if you're the buyer, but some boats may have a negative value. You'll be looking at 2 kinds of Cat22s - dry ones and wet ones. If the dry ones have been recently sailed in fresh water and have a trailer (and you have a place to store it), they could be the best buy. A dry boat that has not been sailed for awhile and is taking up space in someone's yard may need a lot of work and may be missing a lot of things. A salt water Cat22 that's green on the top and bottom, has all the rigging down, and is moldy inside is a sorry sight. Many salt water boats are sailed frequently and have been looked after. You should decide if the boat has to be sailable for you to buy it. If so, ask if the seller will take you out. That will answer a lot of questions. Check if the bottom has lots of green stuff growing from it. Find out how long its been since the motor has been serviced ($300 and up). Check the tension of the shrouds and stays. Look at the sails, preferably raised. You can look at my ad for a comparison (also on sailboatowners.com) http://zen-in.com/cat22/ Good luck

Must do's...

GET A SURVEY...unless you know this boat VERY well. I paid $3000 for mine with 3 Jibs and a trailer. Great shape other than the rigging, which was streched out. Keel pocket and that area inside are areas to look for damage, also check all areas for soft spots where penatrations are. Give the keel and keel cable a CLOSE look, reworking the keel is a major job, look for scaleing. Good Luck, and smooth sailing..it's a GREAT boat...I love mine!

bought a 74 last year..

and am still workin on it. due to lack of money more than anything else. But then, I have a few projects goin on at the same time. I think the biggest problem on mine so far, has been the swing keel.Actually the pivot pin hole in the keel. It's in no way the original size, or shape. It's round, sort of.But I have that problem solved. I think? We'll see what happens. I bought mine knowing full well that I needed to do some work. The things I noticed when first lookin at her were..Needs new mainsail, all the wood needed redoing,(not that much wood really)new halyards, new bottom paint,a little cleaning to the hull,(oxidizing)and the inside, new wheels, tires, wheel bearings and lights for the trailer. But hey, for a few hundred bucks, what the heck. It came with the trailer, life vests, a full tackle box, an oar, two anchors, a motor, vhf radio w/antenna, a solid hull w/no blisters, winch handle, good winches, and a humurous name. Oh, and I bought it from one of those,"donate your car or boat" places. But, thats just me. I like workin on stuff. Most of what needed fixin, I fixed. Cept the main. I'm about to finish up the pivot pin hole problem, then off to the store for some wheel bearings and wheels and tires. Then I think I'm done with the list of things to do. Well, okay, maybe not all done. But far enough to get her in the water... Let's see... if I wanted to single-hand her.... good luck...

Be wary of stolen boats....

See this attached web site article about what to watch for in stolen boats.... I've had my C-22 about 8 months now and love it. When you get your new boat, I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have with mine.

Don't forget the extras!

We just "bought" our Cat22 from a friend. For a dollar. It's been worth every penny, but it's the extras that killed us. Didn't have a motor, didn't have PFDs, a VHF, a GPS, needed reupholstery on the naugahyde cushions, needed a new chart book, a new compass, a battery, a solar charger, and a SLIP as it has a fixed keel. I don't want to tell you the grand total, but it sure was more than a dollar. We're going to have to paint it next year... can't wait for that expense! So, my advice: Don't forget the extras!
