Has anyone here ever had to purchase a new swing keel? If so, would you mind answering the usual questions... How long did it take to receive and how much did it cost. My current swing keel is repairable. I am just trying to decide if it is worth the trouble.

Mine is what I consider a borderline replacement candidate, as well. I'm interested in hearing others assessment of when to replace vs. what can/should be repaired.

Why would a person buy a new swing keel? If the pivot hole is bad then take it to a machine shop and they will bore it and install a bushing.
In this case I could use more information before giving advise. Anything else is usually easy to repair.

After talking to Catalina Direct, I could expect to pay between $1,500 - $2,000. I personally don't see the point spending this kind of money on a 30+ year old boat. So I will repair the keel, unless someone out there knows of a better source for keels. Perhaps a reconditioned keel out of old boat?

Look around on Craigslist and Ebay and such. Here's a link to a swing keel 22 that was in a fire and the owner is parting it out. It took about 15 seconds to find on Google: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/boa/2381525569.html

I know of several being parted out around Annapolis, these were also in Craigslist a while back. Do a search on "Craigslist Catalina 22 parts" or something similar, and keep looking. You'll likely find something near you within a week or two. Good luck!

I'd lean towards repair if at all possible. Shipping of 550 lbs may be problematic.
There are many C22 boats out there and probably something can be found locally in an old boat that would be far cheaper than price of new. So, buy the old boat for the keel and part out the rest. If you happen get a trailer that is in decent condition, it alone may be worth the cost of the used boat.

Catalina Yachts still sells parts and has a parts department, they'll sell you the keel and ship it for FREE if you have it send to a dealer close to you. They just add it to a boat being shipped... Give them a call...

Why buy a new keel, Stainless frame lead encased covered with fiberglass.... Several of the guys I sail with have bought them, pretty slick keel.
