I have a C22 and need to replace t he main halyard. Not sure where I can buy one ( the wire cable is in good shape, just need the rope part replaced ), and need ideas for HOW to install it when I do get it. Thank You in advance.

Running new halyards

Hi Randy - You can source halyard line at a number of chandleries, or right here in the chandlery (see Related link below) - most newer boats now use rope only instead of wire to rope, so you might consider going this way for simplicity. As for running the new halyard, I've been successful in butting up the end of the old halyard with the end of the new halyard and wrapping duct tape around the break numerous times covering about 2" to 4" on either side. You want it to hold when you pull the break over the sheave at the top, but don't want too much tape so it jams up there. Give it a good yank before hauling it up to make sure it holds. Best, Trevor

sew the two ends together

We've replaced halyards by sewing the end of the new halyard to the old halyard with heavy duty sail thread, then placing a cover of duct tape over them. Why take a chance on having the joint come apart at the mast head? Works very well.

Sew It Together

Replacing the halyards (both main and jib) are easy on your vessel. Make sure you match the original halyard diameter and re-use your shackles for attaching tothe new lines for raising the sails. People have used bent paper attached to both lines, some tape other's sewed the two ends together. Luckily your mast can be lowered if the line gets caught in the upper sheeves. Sewing the lines that are butted together provides the best strength and flexibility so the line will not get stuck when feeding in through the mast sheeves. Not a bad idea to invest in a sail repair kit (leather sailors palm, needles and waxed thread)to keep onboard for repairs and to sew the two lines together with a good sized needle and waxed thread. Regards Bob
