Buying a Genoa

I have an '86 Cat 22. The boat came with the original headsail, which I assume is a 100% jib. It is not furling. The jib tracks are outside the lifelines.

I would like to get a genoa for light air days. Is it as simple as buying one, or do I need new blocks, jib tracks, etc.?

Sorry for the ignorance.

Genoa's come in different sizes as I'm sure you know. So the question is how large a genoa do you want? A jib extends from headstay to mast. That is 100%. A 110 genoa extends 10% past the mast, a 135 extends 35% past the mast and a 155 extends 55% past the mast, etc. So, how far back can your jib cars go? They need to be able to go back far enough past the clew to allow some fore and aft adjustment with whatever sail you are using depending on wind conditions.

Sail shop problem!

Any national sail shop will have the specs for that boat to make a sail of any size to fit the rigging set up already on your boat. You just need to figure what size head sail is needed on that boat for the winds in your sail area?

For wind up to 15 mph, White caps, use a 150 headsail, when the boat becomes uncontrollable move the jib car back on the track and reef the main first before reducing headsail size, or sail with just the 150 genoa and not the mainsail. In light winds use the topping lift to raise the boom so the top of the mainsail twist forward towards the spreaders, induce heel with body weight to keep the mainsail full of wind.

The standard jib that comes from Catalina for the C22 is a 110. Most of the C22 sailors that I know use a 150 Genoa, most of them just use the the standard jib track, the serious racers usually install inside jib tracks mounted to the deck next to the super structure and farther aft than the outer jib track. I only have the standard jib track and get good performance with my 150.
