What specific items should I check when looking at a middle aged (1985-1995)Catalina 30 for purchase?

First...

First I would look at the Catalina 30 website. You will find a lot of great information like the history, upgrades, projects,fixes...etc. Next I would hire a good surveyor. Two common items that you will find if you search the archives are the compression post and the Catalina "smile" at the keel to hull joint. Best of luck to you...it's a terrific boat.

Thanks. The Cat 30 website is very helpful. Hope all is well at Lanier, I use to live there.

You might get a copy of Casey's book: Inspecting the Aging Sailboat. Very helpful regardless of model.

Look at the MKII

In looking at boats of this vintage, you'll see that Catalina changed from the MKI to MKII somewhere around Sept 1987. My wife and I looked at a lot of boats and settled on an '88 because of its: opening portlights, lexan hatch over the vee-berth, Tee-shaped cockpit designed to accommodate wheel steering, self-tailing winches, etc. You'll love the boat no matter what, but give the improvements that began with the MKII a look to see if they're worth the cost to you.
