h37c is One of the Better Ones!

Problem areas discussed in this forum are holding tanks, fuel tanks, opening ports, deck delamination and rudders as I recall. Original metal tanks corode and eventually leak. They are difficult to replace and cutting fiberglass may be required. Deck leaks rot out the wood core. Plastic ports usually need replacement or upgrade. Rudders are a concern on most vessels of that vintage. Any good surveyor will check most of this stuff but the original holding tank is impossible to see since it's glasses in under the shower seat. If it's original equipment it's overdue for replacement. Overall the 37C is a great value. Don't let the small stuff bother you. Read they owner reviews for more specific detail. 37c

Barry covered it all I think. For the money nothing else comes close for a cruising boat. For some photos on a 37c go to www.photopoint.com and put my e mail in the member box (advntur@aol.com) Good luck and write if you have any questions.

H37C Photos

Carl's photos are in my bookmarks(I also own an H37C) and the address is: "http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=204587&a=1505977". The problem is there is an ampersand between the "204587" and the "a" which I see here but goes away when I "Submit" this. The "www.photopoint.com" also works but Carl's e-mail address is "SVAdvntur@aol.com", he left off the SV. I assume that you have looked at the 37C pictures posted here in "Owner's Photos", Ron's Talisman pics are good. Ed(schencked@bfusa.com)

some things to check

I have a web page with a lot of the problems of this boat documented. The problems and upgrades are pretty well mixed together (sorry) but if you spend a little time there you will probably find many things to look for. Go to: http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Cabana/7414/upgrades.html The things mentioned in previous responses are valid, also look for signs of water damage from leaking around the companionway boards (it's original construction was very poor), leaking dorade boxes and damage to the deck coring (I've mentioned this and some ways to check it on the web page), the rudder bearing area is sometimes weak (you'll need a mirror to look under the quadrant). If the boat has been grounded, the bearing can be weakened in the hull, allowing seepage through the glass. It should show up as water stains going down the back of that compartment, although it may be hard to distinguish between a minor leaking of the rudderpost stuffing box and leaking through the glass. I have also found cracks in about 4 of the 6 chainplates. They crack at the top bolt on the outside, due to the side loading. Normally they are covered with glued on carpet unless they have been serviced. See if you can peel back the carpet and take a close look. You'll probably need to use some scotchbright to polish the area up to tell. I've replaced all of mine with 3/8" thick plates instead of the original 1/4" factory ones.
