So lately I've been researching the proper way to bed/rebed deck hardware on my boat and see that I should use butyl to seal my through deck hardware. I haven't found any local places that sell it and Im hoping to install my new cam cleats this weekend so I didn't really want to order online and wait till next weekend to install them.

Well, I work in the film industry and on set, the art department usually uses butyl to temporarily hang stuff on walls. Apparently instead of butyl, they use a product called "Joe's Sticky Stuff" which is marketed as a butyl replacement. It's basically clear butyl. It seems to have the same adhesion properties as butyl, forms around screws similar to butyl and according to the website, stays permanently flexible. I wonder if it has the same water sealing properties.

What do you think?

If it's black, it may be a lifetime supply of black streaking, staining, and grief. The good stuff is gray for architectural use. Maine Sail sells it and there is a link in his signature.

If the clear tacky stuff is the material I'm familiar with i don't at all think it is a substitute for butyl tape in the application of bedding deck hardware. In fact, the clear stuff is designed to release easily (and does) which makes me think it's adhesion properties are not up to snuff. I didn't read carefully, but is it even waterproof?

I thought 3M 4200 sealant was the goo of choice for bedding hardware:

4200 Fast Cure is a one-part general purpose Polyurethane selant with a good adhesion to wood, fiberglass, gelcoat, plastics and metals. Forms watertight, weather-resistant seals on joints and boat hardware above or below the waterline. 3m 4200 fast cure is ideal for hardware and bedding applications. Paintable and sandable. This product is approx. half the strength of 3M Marine Adhesive/Sealant 5200, which allows for disassembly of parts.

It is hard to find but Home Depot sells it! (at least in Texas!) Look in the roofing section. It is called something like seam tape. Only thing like it in the store.
